Updating Your Address with the Colorado DMV
When you move to a new residence in Colorado, you're required to update your address with the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). This update ensures that your driver's license, vehicle registration, and any DMV correspondence reflect your current residence. Address updates are legally mandated and must be completed within a specific timeframe to avoid penalties or missed notifications.
When to Update Your Address
Colorado law requires residents to notify the DMV of a change of address within 30 days of moving. This applies whether you’re moving within the state or relocating to Colorado from another state.
Failing to update your address can lead to missed renewal notices, fines, or the suspension of your driving privileges.
Who Needs to Update
You must update your address if you:
- Are a Colorado resident who has changed your home address
- Have moved into Colorado and intend to reside here
- Have changed your mailing address (even if your residence hasn't changed)
This applies to holders of standard driver’s licenses, identification cards, and vehicle registrations.
How to Update Your Address
There are three primary methods to update your address with the Colorado DMV:
Online
The fastest and most convenient way is through the myDMV portal. You can update your:
- Driver's license or ID card address
- Vehicle registration address
You'll need your Colorado driver's license or ID number, license plate number, and last four digits of your Social Security Number.
In Person
If you prefer to update your address in person, visit a Colorado DMV office. Bring:
- A completed Change of Address form (DR2285)
- Proof of your new Colorado address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
- Your current Colorado driver’s license or ID
You can find your nearest location using this resource: Colorado DMV Locations Guide.
By Mail
Mail a completed Change of Address form (DR2285) to:
Colorado Department of Revenue
Division of Motor Vehicles
PO Box 173345
Denver, CO 80217-3345
Make sure to include copies of required documentation.
What Changes with an Address Update
When you update your address, the DMV updates its records for:
- Your driver's license or identification card
- Vehicle title and registration
- Voter registration, if you opt in
However, you will not automatically receive a new license or registration card with the updated address unless you request one and pay the applicable fee.
Fees
There is no fee to update your address in DMV records. However, if you request a new driver's license or ID with the updated address, standard replacement fees apply.
Additional Considerations
- If you have a REAL ID, any address change will require you to provide updated residency documents in person. Learn more here: How to Get a REAL ID in Colorado.
- New residents transferring a license must follow Colorado Driver’s License Eligibility Guide.
- If you are a commercial driver, additional regulations may apply. Check with your employer or the Colorado CDL Licensing Requirements.
Important Tips
- Keep a copy of your address change confirmation.
- Update your address with the U.S. Postal Service separately.
- Notify your insurance company of your address change to ensure proper coverage.
