How to Get a REAL ID in Colorado
Beginning May 7, 2025, a REAL ID will be required to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities unless you have a passport or other TSA-approved identification. In Colorado, obtaining a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card is a straightforward process—but it’s essential to prepare correctly.
What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued identification. A REAL ID has a star in the upper right-hand corner, distinguishing it from a standard license or ID card.
Colorado offers REAL ID-compliant credentials through the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which meet all federal security requirements.
Who Needs a REAL ID?
While it is not mandatory to obtain a REAL ID in Colorado, you will need one (or a valid passport) to:
- Board federally regulated commercial aircraft
- Enter secure federal facilities
- Visit military bases
If you don't plan to fly or access these facilities, your standard ID will still be valid for general identification purposes.
Eligibility for a REAL ID in Colorado
To be eligible for a REAL ID, you must be:
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- A current Colorado resident
- Legally present in the United States
Applicants must also not be under any license suspensions, revocations, or cancellations.
