General Requirements
- Pass vision test
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass road skills test
- Residency: Must be a Minnesota resident. New residents must apply for a Minnesota license within 60 days of establishing residency.
- Parental consent: Required for applicants under 18 years of age. Parent or guardian must sign the application in person.
- Other: For learner's permit: Must complete at least 15 hours of classroom instruction and be enrolled in behind-the-wheel instruction. For provisional license: Must hold permit for 6 months with no moving violations, complete driver education (30 hours classroom, 6 hours behind-the-wheel), and log 50 hours of supervised driving (15 at night) or 40 hours (15 at night) if parent completes a 90-minute awareness class. For full license: Must hold provisional license for 12 months with no alcohol/controlled substance violations, no crash-related moving violations, and not more than one non-crash-related moving violation. If under 18, must complete an additional 10 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver at least 21 years old.
