General Requirements
- Pass vision test
- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass road skills test
- Residency: Must be a New York State resident. Must provide two proofs of New York State residency such as utility bills, bank statements, or pay stubs showing current address. Documents with P.O. Box addresses are not acceptable.
- Parental consent: Required for applicants under 18. Parent or guardian must accompany minor to the DMV to start the application process.
- Other: Learner permit holders must hold permit for at least 6 months before taking road test. Under 18 applicants must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (including 15 hours at night and 10 hours in moderate traffic). All applicants must complete a state-approved pre-licensing course or driver education course. New drivers of all ages are subject to a 6-month probationary period. Junior license holders have additional driving restrictions based on location and time of day.
