General Requirements

- Pass written knowledge test
- Pass road skills test
- Residency: Must have a physical residential address in South Dakota, live full-time in an RV/camper, or travel full-time for work. Must live in South Dakota for more than 90 days to be required to have a South Dakota license.

- Other: For learner's permit: Must hold permit for 180 days with driver's education or 275 days without. Must complete 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours at night, 10 hours in inclement weather) before upgrading to restricted permit. For restricted permit: Must not have traffic convictions in previous 6 months. Must hold restricted permit for 6 months before upgrading to full license.
