Replacing a Lost or Stolen Colorado License
Losing your driver’s license or having it stolen is inconvenient, but the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has a clear process in place to help you replace it quickly. Whether you're in-state or out-of-state, this guide covers everything you need to know to get back on the road legally.
Eligibility for Replacement
You are eligible to replace your Colorado driver’s license if:
- Your license has been lost, stolen, or destroyed.
- Your license is not expired.
- You are a Colorado resident.
- You are able to verify your identity with required documents.
If your license is due to expire within the next 6 months, the DMV recommends renewing instead of replacing.
Replacement Options
Colorado offers two primary ways to replace your driver’s license:
1. Online Replacement
You may be eligible to replace your license online through the myDMV portal. To qualify, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Have a valid Social Security number on file.
- Not need to change any personal information (e.g., name or address).
- Have a good photo on file from a recent DMV visit.
The online service is available 24/7, and you’ll receive your new license by mail within 10-14 business days.
2. In-Person Replacement
If you’re not eligible for online replacement or prefer an in-person visit, schedule an appointment at your nearest Colorado DMV office. Bring the following:
- One form of identification (e.g., passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card)
- Proof of Colorado residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
- Payment for the replacement fee
Use the Colorado DMV appointment scheduler to reserve a time.
Out-of-State Requests
If you're temporarily out of state and need to replace your license, you can request a duplicate by mail. Contact the DMV’s Driver Services at (303) 205-5600 or complete the DR 2989 form available on the Colorado DMV website.
Note: Temporary permits are not issued for out-of-state replacements.
Fees and Payment
As of 2025, the fee to replace a lost or stolen Colorado driver’s license is $12. Payments can be made via credit/debit card online or by check/money order in person.
Additional charges may apply if expedited shipping or other services are requested.
Reporting a Stolen License
While not required, it’s strongly recommended that you file a police report if your license was stolen. This can help protect you from identity theft. Bring a copy of the report with you when visiting the DMV.
REAL ID and Replacement
If you have a REAL ID-compliant license (marked with a star in the upper right corner), the replacement process remains the same. If you wish to upgrade to a REAL ID during replacement, additional documentation will be required.
