How to Renew Your Colorado Driver’s License
Renewing your Colorado driver’s license is a straightforward process, but it's important to understand the methods available, eligibility criteria, and required documents to avoid delays or penalties. The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers several renewal options to accommodate various needs, including online, in-person, and mail renewals.
When to Renew
Colorado driver’s licenses are typically valid for five years. You should renew your license before the expiration date, which is listed on the front of the card. The DMV allows renewals up to one year before the expiration date. There is no grace period once your license expires—you must cease driving until it is renewed.
Renewal Methods
Online Renewal
Most drivers can renew online through the Colorado DMV's myDMV portal. This is the fastest and most convenient method, available if:
- You are between 21 and 65 years old
- You have a valid Social Security Number on file
- Your last renewal was not done online
- You have no outstanding tickets or issues with your driving record
You will need:
- Your current driver’s license number
- A valid email address
- A credit/debit card for payment
Once processed, your new license will be mailed to you.
In-Person Renewal
In-person renewals are necessary if:
- You are over 65 or under 21
- You need to update your photo or address
- Your license is expired
- You do not meet the criteria for online renewal
You can schedule an appointment at a local Colorado DMV office. Bring the following:
- Your current or expired driver’s license
- Proof of Colorado residency (such as a utility bill or bank statement)
- Proof of legal presence or identity (such as a birth certificate or passport)
- Social Security Number (card, W-2, or 1099 form)
Vision testing will be conducted during in-person renewals.
Mail Renewal
Mail renewals are limited to specific cases, such as Colorado residents temporarily living out-of-state. Contact the DMV directly at 303-205-5600 to request a mail-in application and confirm eligibility.
Fees
As of 2025, the standard fee to renew a Colorado driver’s license is $30.87. Additional fees may apply if you’re renewing a commercial license or require expedited service.
Fee payments can be made by credit/debit card online or by check or card at DMV locations.
Real ID Compliance
When renewing in person, you can opt to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant license. REAL ID is federally recognized and necessary for boarding domestic flights or entering federal facilities. You’ll need additional documents, including:
- Proof of identity
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Two documents verifying Colorado residency

Special Circumstances
- Military Members and Dependents: Active-duty military members stationed outside Colorado and their dependents may receive a three-year extension. Submit a Military Affidavit of Extension form with a copy of your military ID.
- Senior Drivers: If you are over 65, in-person renewal is required every five years. Additional vision screening may apply.
