How to Apply for a Colorado Motorcycle License
Obtaining a motorcycle license in Colorado involves a combination of education, testing, and paperwork. Whether you're a new rider or transferring from another state, the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has specific steps to ensure you're ready for the road.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a motorcycle endorsement (Class M) on your Colorado driver’s license, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Possess a valid Colorado driver's license or instruction permit.
- Complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course if under 18.
Minors must also hold a motorcycle instruction permit for at least 12 months before applying for a license.
Step 1: Get a Motorcycle Instruction Permit
Applicants under 18 are required to obtain a motorcycle instruction permit before applying for a full license. To do this:
- Pass the written motorcycle knowledge exam at a Colorado DMV office.
- Provide proof of identity and lawful presence in the U.S.
- Complete the Affidavit of Liability and Guardianship if under 18.
- Pay the applicable fee.
For those 18 and older, a permit is optional but recommended for practice before taking the skills test.
Step 2: Take a Motorcycle Safety Course (Optional but Recommended)
Colorado strongly encourages all riders to complete a Motorcycle Operator Safety Training (MOST) course. Completion of a MOST course allows you to skip the skills test at the DMV. The course includes both classroom instruction and on-cycle training.
- Riders under 18 are required to complete MOST.
- Adults who pass MOST receive a completion card valid for one year.
Step 3: Pass the Required Tests
Knowledge Test
If you haven’t completed MOST, you must pass the written motorcycle knowledge test based on the Colorado Motorcycle Operator’s Handbook.
Skills Test
Those who do not take a MOST course must pass a skills test administered at a third-party testing center or DMV-approved facility. Test components include:
- Starting and stopping
- Turning and swerving
- Quick stops
- Obstacle avoidance
Step 4: Visit the DMV to Add the Motorcycle Endorsement
Bring the following documents to a Colorado DMV location:
- Completion card from MOST (if applicable)
- Valid Colorado driver's license or permit
- Proof of identification
- Applicable fees (usually around $2 for the endorsement plus any license renewal fees)
Your Class M endorsement will be added to your regular driver’s license.
Motorcycle Endorsement vs. Motorcycle-Only License
If you don’t have a standard driver’s license, you can apply for a motorcycle-only license. The process is similar but will restrict you from operating other types of motor vehicles.
Transferring an Out-of-State Motorcycle License
If you’re moving to Colorado and already have a motorcycle endorsement from another state:
- Present your current out-of-state license at the DMV.
- Colorado typically waives the knowledge and skills tests.
- You may still be required to provide proof of a completed safety course, depending on your age and history.
