Steps to Obtain a California Driver's License

Getting a California driver’s license is a critical step for residents who plan to operate a motor vehicle in the state. The process varies slightly depending on your age, driving history, and whether you are a new resident or first-time driver. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how to obtain your California driver's license.

Determine Eligibility

To apply for a standard Class C driver’s license in California, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old (with a provisional license)
  • Be at least 18 years old (for a full license without restrictions)
  • Be a California resident
  • Not be currently suspended or revoked in another state

Teen drivers under 18 must first obtain a provisional permit and complete a driver education and training program.

Gather Required Documents

Before you apply, gather the necessary documentation to prove identity, residency, and legal presence:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., valid passport, birth certificate)
  • Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)
  • Two proofs of California residency (e.g., utility bills, lease agreement)
  • If applying for a REAL ID, make sure to bring documents that comply with federal standards

For details, refer to the California REAL ID: What You Need to Know.

Complete a Driver’s License Application

You can fill out the DL 44 form either online through the California DMV website or in person at a DMV office. When applying online, you’ll receive a confirmation code that must be presented at the DMV.

Schedule and Pass the Knowledge Test

Applicants must pass a written knowledge test that covers traffic laws, signs, and safe driving practices. Prepare using the California Driver Handbook and consider practice tests like those found in Test Preparation Tips for California Learners.

Testing Information:

  • The test consists of 46 questions (you must get at least 38 correct if under 18)
  • Adults (18+) take a 36-question version
  • The test is available in multiple languages and can be taken with audio assistance

Take the Vision and Fingerprint Scans

During your visit, you’ll also undergo a vision exam and fingerprinting. A photo will be taken for your driver’s license.

Obtain a Learner’s Permit (If Under 18)

Teens must hold a learner’s permit for at least six months before taking the driving test. During this time, they must:

  • Complete 6 hours of professional driver training
  • Log 50 hours of supervised driving (10 hours at night)

See Steps to Obtain a California Driver's License for provisional license guidance.

Schedule and Pass the Behind-the-Wheel Driving Test

After passing the written test and completing any permit requirements, you must take a behind-the-wheel driving test. To do so:

  • Make an appointment online or by calling 1-800-777-0133
  • Bring a vehicle that is safe, registered, and insured
  • Be accompanied by a licensed driver if you are under 18

Pay the Required Fees

The fee for a Class C driver’s license is currently $41. This covers both the written and driving tests. If you fail any portion, retests may require additional fees.

Receive Your Temporary and Permanent License

Upon successful completion of all requirements:

  • You will receive a temporary license valid for 90 days
  • Your permanent driver’s license will arrive by mail within 2–4 weeks
