California REAL ID: What You Need to Know
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID to board domestic flights and access certain federal facilities—unless you carry a valid passport or another TSA-approved form of ID.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally compliant driver’s license or identification card that is marked with a golden bear and a star in the top right corner. It confirms that the cardholder has met enhanced security standards.
In California, the REAL ID is issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and can be used for:
- Boarding domestic flights within the U.S.
- Entering secure federal buildings and military bases
You do not need a REAL ID to drive, vote, or receive federal benefits.
Do You Need a REAL ID?
You must get a REAL ID if:
- You want to board domestic flights without a passport
- You need to access certain federal facilities
If you don’t fly or visit secure federal buildings, you may not need one. A standard California driver's license remains valid for all other identification and driving purposes.
How to Apply for a REAL ID in California
To apply, you must visit a California DMV office in person and bring original or certified copies of specific documents. You can begin your application online to save time at the DMV.
You must provide:
- Proof of Identity (e.g., valid U.S. passport, certified birth certificate)
- Proof of Social Security Number (e.g., Social Security card, W-2)
- Two Proofs of California Residency (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement)
For the most current documentation requirements, refer to the official CA DMV REAL ID page.
Differences Between REAL ID and a Standard License

---|---|---|
Domestic Air Travel | Yes | No (after May 7, 2025) |
Federal Building Access | Yes | No |
TSA Compliant | Yes | No |
Appearance | Star with golden bear | "Federal Limits Apply" note |
Alternatives to REAL ID
If you choose not to obtain a REAL ID, you can still fly domestically with:
- A valid U.S. passport
- Military ID
- DHS Trusted Traveler card (e.g., Global Entry)
However, carrying a passport for domestic flights can be inconvenient and risky in case of loss or theft.
Additional Tips
- Schedule an appointment at your local DMV to avoid long wait times.
- Use the REAL ID checklist from the CA DMV to make sure you bring the correct documents.
- If your name has changed (e.g., due to marriage), bring legal proof of the name change.
