Changing Your Name on California DMV Records

If you've legally changed your name due to marriage, divorce, or a court order, updating your name on California DMV records is essential. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires individuals to update their driver’s license, identification card, vehicle registration, and title to reflect the new legal name. Here’s what you need to know to get it done smoothly.

Legal Name Change Prerequisites

Before contacting the DMV, ensure your name is updated with the Social Security Administration (SSA). The DMV verifies your name through SSA records, and your application will be delayed or denied if there's a mismatch.

Visit SSA.gov or call 1-800-772-1213 to update your name. Wait at least 72 hours after SSA confirms the change before proceeding to the DMV.

Required Documents

To change your name with the California DMV, bring the following:

  • Proof of the legal name change:
    • Certified marriage certificate
    • Divorce decree specifying the name change
    • Court order for name change
  • Your current California driver’s license or ID
  • An updated Social Security card (or documentation showing the SSA name update)

Updating Your Driver’s License or ID

You must visit a DMV field office in person to request a name change on your California driver’s license or identification card. Follow these steps:

  1. Complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application (DL 44).
    • This form is available at DMV offices and online through your DMV account.
  2. Schedule an appointment at your nearest DMV office.
  3. Present your required documents in person.
  4. Pay the replacement fee:
    • As of 2025, the fee is $30 for a driver’s license and $28 for an ID card.

After processing, you'll receive a temporary license or ID valid for 90 days. The official card will be mailed within 2–4 weeks.

Updating Vehicle Registration and Title

You must also update your name on your vehicle records:

  1. Complete the Statement of Facts (REG 256) form.
  2. Provide your updated driver’s license or ID.
  3. Submit your request by mail or in person at a DMV office.

For title changes, you’ll also need to submit:

  • The California Certificate of Title
  • A completed Application for Duplicate or Paperless Title (REG 227) if you don’t have the original title

The fee for a corrected title is currently $23.

Important Notes

  • The DMV does not allow name changes online or by phone.
  • You must update all applicable records—changing your license alone does not update your vehicle registration or title.
  • Your voter registration, TSA travel records, and other identification documents may also need updating once your DMV records reflect the new name.
