Renewing Your California Instruction Permit

If your California instruction permit is about to expire and you haven’t yet earned your driver’s license, it’s essential to understand the renewal process to avoid any interruptions in your driving practice.

How Long Is a California Instruction Permit Valid?

A California instruction permit is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued. This applies whether you're a teen under 18 with a provisional permit or an adult over 18 who holds a standard instruction permit.

Who Needs to Renew?

Renewal is necessary if:

  • You're under 18 and haven't passed your behind-the-wheel driving test within the 12-month period.
  • You're over 18 and your permit expires before you obtain your license.

If your permit expires, you must apply for a renewal to continue practicing legally.

Steps to Renew Your Instruction Permit

1. Schedule an Appointment

Although walk-ins are sometimes allowed, scheduling an appointment with the California DMV is the fastest way to renew. You can do this via the California DMV website.

2. Complete the Driver License or Identification Card Application

Submit the DL 44 form again. You may also complete this form online through the DMV portal before your visit.

3. Provide Proof of Identity (If Required)

If it has been more than a year since you last applied or your information has changed, you may be asked to provide proof of:

  • Identity
  • Social Security Number
  • California residency

Refer to the California REAL ID requirements for a full list of acceptable documents.

4. Pay the Renewal Fee

As of 2025, the fee to renew an instruction permit in California is approximately $39. This fee may vary, so confirm the current amount on the DMV fee page.

5. Retake the Knowledge Test (If Required)

You may be required to retake the written knowledge test if:

  • Your permit has been expired for an extended time
  • You’ve failed the test three times during your previous application cycle

Under 18? Know the Provisional Permit Rules

Teens under 18 must complete:

  • A DMV-approved driver’s education course
  • At least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training
  • 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 at night)

If your permit expires before completing these steps, you’ll need to renew it to continue. Learn more from our guide on Steps to Obtain a California Driver's License.

If You Let Your Permit Expire

If your permit expires:

  • You are no longer legally allowed to practice driving
  • You’ll need to go through parts of the application process again
  • A new photograph, application, and possibly a retest will be required

To avoid this, renew your permit before the expiration date.
