Obtaining a Florida Motorcycle Endorsement
To legally ride a motorcycle in Florida, you must have a motorcycle endorsement on your driver license or a motorcycle-only license. The process involves age requirements, training, testing, and visiting the DMV with proper documentation. Here's how to get started.
Who Needs a Motorcycle Endorsement?
If you plan to operate a two- or three-wheeled motorcycle with an engine larger than 50cc on public roads, Florida law requires a motorcycle endorsement on your Class E driver license or a motorcycle-only license.
Eligibility Requirements
Before applying for a motorcycle endorsement in Florida, you must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Possess a valid Florida Class E driver license (or obtain one first).
- Complete the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) approved by the Florida Rider Training Program.
Applicants under 18 must also hold a learner's license for at least 12 months without traffic convictions, as detailed in the Florida Driver License Requirements for Teens.
Complete the Basic RiderCourse (BRC)
The BRC is an approved motorcycle safety course offered by various training providers throughout Florida. It includes:
- 5 hours of classroom instruction
- 10 hours of practical riding
Upon successful completion, your provider will electronically submit your course completion to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).
Visit the DMV to Add Your Endorsement
After passing the BRC, go to a Florida DMV office or tax collector location that issues licenses. You’ll need to:
- Present proof of BRC completion (if not already submitted electronically)
- Provide your current Class E license
- Pay the endorsement fee (typically around $7, plus standard transaction fees)

Motorcycle-Only License Option
If you do not have a Class E license and want a motorcycle-only license, the process includes:
- Passing the Class E Knowledge Exam
- Completing the BRC
- Providing identification documents and proof of residence
- Paying applicable fees
You can prepare for the written test using resources like Preparing for the Florida Class E Knowledge Exam.
Other Important Notes for Riders
- Florida does not require a separate road test for motorcycle endorsement if the BRC is completed.
- Helmets are required for riders under 21 and for anyone without at least $10,000 in medical insurance coverage.
- Motorcycle endorsements do not expire separately; they remain valid as long as your driver license is valid.
Safe Riding and Legal Awareness
Motorcyclists in Florida must comply with all traffic laws, including:
- Florida's Move Over Law, which protects roadside workers and emergency vehicles
- Florida's No Texting While Driving Law, which applies to all motorists including motorcyclists
- Understanding Florida's Right Lane Law, crucial for lane positioning and passing safely
