Updating Your Address on a Florida Driver License

Florida law requires drivers to update the address on their driver license within 30 days of moving. Failing to do so can result in missed communication from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), potential fines, and complications with vehicle registration and insurance. Here's everything you need to know to complete your address update efficiently.

Who Needs to Update Their Address?

Anyone with a Florida driver license who changes their residential address, even temporarily, is required to notify the FLHSMV. This includes:

  • People moving within the state
  • Individuals relocating from a temporary to a permanent Florida address
  • College students establishing a new Florida residence

Note: If you are moving out of state, you are not required to notify Florida, but you should surrender your Florida license once a new one is issued in your new state.

How to Update Your Address

Florida offers several convenient ways to update your address:

1. Online

The quickest and easiest method is through the GoRenew portal. You will need:

  • Your Florida driver license number
  • Social Security Number (last four digits)
  • Date of birth
  • Payment method for the $25 fee (if a new license is issued)

Online updates are eligible for both standard and REAL ID-compliant licenses.

2. In Person

Visit a local FLHSMV office or authorized tax collector. Bring:

  • Proof of your new residential address (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
  • Original documents proving identity (if changing to a REAL ID license)
  • Payment for applicable fees

3. By Mail

Address updates by mail are limited and not always available, especially for REAL ID licenses. Contact your nearest DMV office to verify eligibility.

Do You Need a New License?

If you're only changing your address and your license is still valid, you can order a replacement license with your updated address. This costs $25. If your license is due to expire soon, you may choose to renew it early instead.

Updating Your Vehicle Registration

Changing your address for your driver license does not automatically update your vehicle registration. You must do this separately, which can also be done online.

Special Considerations for REAL ID

If you have a REAL ID-compliant license, you'll need to bring extra documentation proving your new address when updating in person. This includes:

  • Two documents with your new address
  • Identity and legal presence documentation

Address Update Confirmation

Once processed, you will receive your updated license by mail. You should also confirm your voter registration address and notify your insurance provider to avoid coverage issues.

The address on your license must match the address in FLHSMV’s system, so keeping it current is both a legal requirement and a practical necessity.
