Florida's REAL ID Requirements
Starting May 7, 2025, every air traveler 18 years and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver license or identification card to fly within the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Florida residents must ensure their credentials meet these standards if they intend to use their ID for federal identification purposes.
What is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, sets security standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver licenses. A REAL ID-compliant license features a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. It indicates that the ID meets federal security standards and can be used to:
- Board domestic flights
- Enter federal buildings
- Access military bases
Who Needs a REAL ID in Florida?
You only need a REAL ID if you plan to use your Florida driver license or ID card for federal purposes like boarding commercial flights or entering secure federal facilities. If you have a valid U.S. passport or military ID, you can use those instead.
How to Get a REAL ID in Florida
Florida has been issuing REAL ID-compliant licenses since January 4, 2010. To obtain one, you must visit a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) office in person. Online or mail applications are not accepted for first-time REAL ID issuance.
Here’s what to bring:
- Proof of identity (e.g., U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., Social Security card or W-2 form)
- Two proofs of Florida residential address (e.g., utility bills, lease agreements)
You can find a complete checklist of acceptable documents in What to Bring for Your Florida Driver License Appointment.
Additional Tips
- Name changes (e.g., due to marriage or divorce) require legal documentation (marriage certificate, court order).
- If you're renewing your license, verify whether your current card is already REAL ID-compliant by checking for the gold star.
- Appointments can be scheduled through the FLHSMV website.
Cost of a REAL ID
There is no additional fee for a REAL ID-compliant license if you're getting one during your regular renewal period. If applying outside the renewal period, standard replacement fees apply. For a detailed breakdown, visit Florida DMV Fees: What You Need to Know.
