Paying Traffic Tickets in the District of Columbia
Receiving a traffic ticket in Washington, D.C. requires timely action to avoid additional penalties. The District offers multiple methods for paying fines related to parking, photo enforcement, and minor moving violations.
Payment Methods
1. Online
You can pay your ticket online using the DC DMV's online payment portal. To proceed, you'll need:
- Ticket Number or
- State and License Plate Number
Accepted payment methods include Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. After completing the transaction, ensure you print or save the confirmation for your records.
2. Mobile App
The DC DMV offers a mobile application that allows users to pay tickets conveniently. The app is available for download on both iOS and Android platforms.
3. By Mail
To pay by mail:
- Do not send cash. Only checks or money orders are accepted.
- Make payments payable to DC Treasurer.
- Include the ticket number in the memo line. If unavailable, provide the vehicle's state and license plate number.

- In Person: Visit the Adjudication Services Center to pay and retrieve information about boot, tow, and ticket fees.
Note: Checks are not accepted for releasing booted or towed vehicles.
Important Considerations
- Do Not Pay If Contesting: If you intend to contest a ticket, do not pay it. Paying is considered an admission of guilt and forfeits your right to contest.
- Penalties: Failure to pay within 30 days results in a penalty equal to the original fine. After 60 days, additional penalties may apply.
- Ticket Alert Service (TAS): Enroll in TAS to receive notifications about new tickets and adjudication decisions.
