How to Obtain a Learner's Permit in Connecticut
Obtaining a learner’s permit is the first step toward becoming a licensed driver in Connecticut. The process is managed by the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and is designed to ensure new drivers develop safe driving habits under supervision.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a learner's permit in Connecticut, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 16 years old
- Reside in Connecticut
- Have proof of legal presence in the U.S.
- Not currently hold a driver’s license in any other state or country
Parental or guardian consent is required for applicants under 18 years old.
Preparing for the Knowledge Test
Before applying, you must pass a knowledge test covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. The Connecticut Driver’s Manual is a crucial resource and can be downloaded from the official DMV website.
Additionally, you can enhance your preparation with tools like the How to Get a Driver's License in Connecticut guide.
Scheduling Your Appointment
Connecticut requires all learner’s permit applicants to schedule an appointment for testing. Walk-ins are not accepted. Appointments can be booked through the CT DMV online portal.
You’ll need to:
- Create a DMV account if you don’t already have one
- Choose your testing location
- Select a time slot for your knowledge test
Required Documents
Bring the following to your appointment:
- Proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or valid passport
- Proof of Social Security number, like a Social Security card or W-2 form
- Two proofs of Connecticut residency, such as utility bills or school records
- Parental consent form (for minors)
A full list of acceptable documents is available on the DMV's REAL ID requirements page.
Taking the Test
The knowledge test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer at least 20 correctly to pass. The test is administered on a computer and is available in multiple languages.
If you fail, you must wait 7 days before retaking the test and pay an additional fee.
Vision Screening
In addition to the knowledge test, a vision screening is required. You must have at least 20/40 vision in one or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses.
Learner's Permit Restrictions
Once issued, the learner’s permit allows you to drive under the following conditions:
- You must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 20 years old, has held a license for at least 4 years, and has no license suspensions
- You may not use a mobile phone or other handheld electronic devices while driving
- You must complete 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training
You are also encouraged to take a driver education course. More information is available in the Connecticut Right-of-Way Rules Explained and Connecticut Speeding Laws and Penalties resources.
Advancing to a Full License
After holding your learner’s permit for at least 120 days (if you complete a driver education course) or 180 days (without a course), you become eligible to take the road skills test to obtain a full driver’s license.
