Renewal Methods
Online Renewal
Eligible drivers can renew their licenses online through the DC DMV Online Services. To qualify for online renewal, you must:
- Hold a REAL ID or Limited Purpose driver license that has not been expired for more than 365 days.
- Have your current name and address on file with the DC DMV.
- Have no changes in medical conditions that could affect driving ability.
The online renewal process involves:
- Entering your driver license renewal information.
- Completing a medical questionnaire.
- Updating organ donor information.
- Paying the renewal fee using a valid credit card.
- Printing the receipt and, if necessary, a 45-day temporary paper driver license.
Your new license will be mailed to your address on file within 10 to 15 business days.
By-Mail Renewal
If eligible, you may receive a renewal notice 60 days before your license expires, allowing you to renew by mail. The process includes:
- Completing the renewal application included in the notice.
- Mailing the application along with any required documents and payment.
- Awaiting processing, which typically takes 7–10 business days from receipt.
Allow up to 15 business days to receive your new license before contacting the DC DMV.
In-Person Renewal
If you do not meet the criteria for online or mail renewal, you must renew in person at a DC DMV Service Center. Bring the following documents:
- Proof of identity.
- Proof of Social Security number.
- Two proofs of DC residency.
- Your current DC driver license.
You will also need to pay the applicable renewal fee.
