How to Replace a Lost Delaware License
Losing your Delaware driver's license can be stressful, but the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers straightforward options to obtain a duplicate. Whether you're in-state or temporarily out-of-state, here's how to replace your lost, stolen, or destroyed license.
Eligibility and Required Documentation
To apply for a duplicate license, you must:
- Be a current Delaware license holder.
- Present valid identification documents.
Required Documents:
- Proof of Identity: One primary document (e.g., certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport) and one secondary document (e.g., Social Security card, W-2 form).
- Proof of Social Security Number: Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub containing full SSN.
- Proof of Delaware Residency: Two documents from separate sources, such as utility bills or bank statements, dated within the last 60 days.
Note: If you're under 18 or hold a Graduated Driver License (GDL), your sponsor must accompany you to authorize the duplicate request.
Application Process
In-Person Application
Visit any Delaware DMV location to apply for a duplicate license. Bring the required documents and be prepared to pay the $20.00 replacement fee.
Online Application
Eligible individuals can request a duplicate license online through the Delaware DMV Online Services. After logging into your myDMV account:
- Select "Drivers License/ID Transactions."
- Choose "Duplicate License."
- Follow the prompts to complete the application and payment.
A temporary paper license can be printed immediately, and your new license will be mailed to your address on file.
Note: Online services are not available for holders of commercial driver licenses, graduated driver licenses, or individuals who utilized the self-service kiosk during their last DMV visit.
