Updating Your Address with the Connecticut DMV

Keeping your address current with the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is a legal requirement and ensures you receive important notices, renewal reminders, and driving records without delay. Whether you've moved within Connecticut or are new to the state, here’s everything you need to know about updating your address with the CT DMV.

Who Needs to Update Their Address?

All residents holding a Connecticut driver's license, non-driver ID, vehicle registration, or title must update their address with the DMV within 48 hours of moving. This applies to:

  • Individual drivers
  • Commercial drivers
  • Vehicle owners
  • Holders of learner’s permits or non-driver identification cards

Failure to update your address may result in penalties or missed correspondence, including suspension notices or registration renewals.

How to Update Your Address

Online

The Connecticut DMV allows most residents to update their address online through the DMV Address Change Portal. To use the portal, you'll need:

  • Your current driver’s license or ID number
  • The last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Your new address

After completing the online change of address, you’ll receive a confirmation, and the DMV’s records will be updated immediately. However, you won’t receive a new license or registration certificate automatically—you must request those separately.

In Person

You can also update your address in person by visiting a DMV hub office or participating AAA location (if you are a member). Bring your current license or ID, and proof of your new address, such as a utility bill, lease agreement, or official government correspondence.

By Mail

To change your address by mail, complete the Change of Address Form (B-58) and send it to:

Department of Motor Vehicles
60 State Street
Wethersfield, CT 06161

Make sure to include identifying information and clearly print your new address.

Updating Address on Different Records

Driver’s License or ID Card

Updating your address updates DMV records but does not automatically issue a new license or ID card with the new address. If you need a license or ID with the updated address, request a replacement online or in person for a small fee.

Vehicle Registration and Title

Just like your driver’s license, your vehicle registration record will reflect the new address once updated. However, if you want a new registration document or title certificate showing the updated address, you must request a duplicate.

Special Circumstances

Military Members

Active duty military personnel stationed outside Connecticut can still update their address online. They are advised to also inform the DMV of their status to ensure records and renewal schedules accommodate their service.

Commercial Drivers

Commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders must notify the DMV of any address change within 30 days. For more information, visit Connecticut CDL License Requirements and Process.

When to Update

You must notify the Connecticut DMV within 48 hours of any address change. Although you won’t be penalized if you forget temporarily, prolonged delays can result in fines or license suspension, especially if you miss a court or renewal notice.
