How to Renew Your Driver's License in Connecticut
Renewing your driver's license in Connecticut is a straightforward process, but it requires attention to timing, documentation, and your eligibility status. The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offers several convenient options for renewal depending on your age, license status, and whether you want a REAL ID-compliant license.
When to Renew
Connecticut driver's licenses are valid for 6 years for most drivers and 2 years for individuals aged 65 and older. You can renew your license up to 180 days before it expires. The DMV sends a renewal notice about 60 days prior to your license’s expiration date.
Driving with an expired license is illegal and could lead to penalties, including fines or even arrest. If your license has been expired for more than two years, you will need to retake the vision, knowledge, and road tests.
Renewal Methods
You can renew your Connecticut driver’s license in three main ways:
1. Online
Renewing online is the fastest and most convenient option. To be eligible, you must:
- Hold a license that is not suspended, revoked, or expired for more than two years
- Have a current address on file with the DMV
- Have no unpaid fees or violations
You’ll need to use the DMV’s online renewal portal and provide your license number, Social Security Number, and a valid payment method.
2. In Person
If you need to update your photo, change personal information, or want to obtain a REAL ID, you must visit a DMV office in person. Required documents include:
- Your current driver’s license
- Proof of identity, legal presence, and Connecticut residency
- Your Social Security card or a W-2 form showing your SSN
Appointments are recommended and can be made through the Connecticut DMV appointment system.
For a detailed breakdown of the REAL ID requirements, see Connecticut REAL ID Requirements and Application Process.
3. By Mail
Mail renewal is only available under special circumstances, such as for military personnel or residents temporarily living out of state. You must complete and submit the Form B-350, available on the DMV website, along with the appropriate payment.
Required Documents
Depending on how you renew, you'll typically need:
- Your current driver’s license
- Proof of Social Security Number
- Two documents showing Connecticut residency (for REAL ID)
- A form of payment (credit/debit card, check, or money order)
Fees
The standard renewal fee is $72 for a six-year license. If you’re 65 or older, the fee is $24 for a two-year license. Additional fees may apply for late renewals or if you're converting to a REAL ID.

Vision Requirements
A vision test is required if you're renewing in person and haven't had a test in the last 12 years. You must have 20/40 vision in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.
Special Cases
Military Personnel
Active-duty military members and their dependents can renew their licenses by mail and may qualify for license extensions during deployment. More details are available on the CT DMV Military Services page.
Senior Drivers
